Technologies and Standards of DVD

DVD (Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc) is a format of a digital optical data media that can contain films of a very high picture and sound quality or other data. When developing a DVD the emphasis was put on the compatibility with CD and that is why the DVD disc is very similar.

DVD History

DVD was introduced in Japan in 1996 and in the rest of the world it was a year later. The official norm of the DVD-R(W) discs was created by DVD Forum that was established in April 1997. But the licence prices were so high that another group DVD+RW Alliance- was established and created a DVD+R(W) norm whose licences was cheaper.

Creating Your Own DVD (DVD Authorization)

Creating Chapter Marks

This way helps us delimit component chapters of a video and later the marks help the watcher move to different places using appropriate buttons or clicking the required chapter in the menu.

The mark is inserted by moving the scroll bar on the timeline into the place where we want to place the mark and by clicking the button  tlatko that can be found on the timeline in its left corner just next to the symbol of a magnet (Snap). Its name is Set Encore Chapter Marker. Moving the scroll bar to the place where we want to have the mark and clicking the right mouse button on the timeline where the time is displayed is another possibility. From the menu than choose "Set Encore Chapter Marker".

Export into Adobe Encode CS4

Is done the following way:

File -> Adobe Dynamic Link -> Set to Encore

A dialog box appears.

Types of DVD

  • DVD with an auto-play - this type represents a simple possibility when we want to place a final product on a DVD and watch it immediately. And if we have created chapter marks in Adobe Premiere CS4 we can skip from one chapter to another using appropriate buttons on the device or on its control.
  • DVD with menu - this type of creating a DVD puts stress on aesthetic. We can play the final video there or move in it but we can also create a menu that welcomes us after inserting the media into the device. This menu is not only elegant but also offers wider possibilities of orientation on the disc.

Creating a DVD with a Menu

Mark the timeline in Premiere and send it to the Adobe Encore program in the menu File -> Adobe Dynamic Link -> Set to Encore. Now Adobe Encore includes the sent sequence (dynamic link) from Premiere and the timeline in the project window - both with the same title.

If the timeline is not displayed, we can open it by clicking (twice by the left button).

And now we add the menu. Choose Library in the bottom right part and click "Toggle display of menus". The filter of the menu is set. This option enables us to see the titles of the menu and browse it. In the preview we can see what it looks like. There is an option "Set" in the right part and there we can choose different groups of the menu, e.g. the topics of school, sport, wedding and so on. The menu we want to use is chosen by a double click
